This master of longevity was Henry Allingham. Born in 1896, he worked as an instrument maker and then as a coachbuilder. In 1915, he joined the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and trained as a mechanic. He was transferred to the RAF when it was formed in 1918. After the war, Henry worked for car manufacturers - and spent the majority of his working life as an engineer and designer at Ford’s main works in Dagenham from 1934 -60. As his life continued into his second century, he took many records: oldest man in Britain; oldest survivor of the Battle of Jutland; oldest living former member of the armed forces - and oldest surviving founder member of the RAF. When he died in Eastbourne in July 2009, he had been the oldest officially-recorded man in the world for the previous month... |
